2008 Ekka Queensland Government Pavilion


Government Departments

Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian
Our display encourages children to think about managing the risks of harm around them.

The red-carpet theme will give children the chance to learn about their personal safety through a fun, interactive computer quiz.

If they answer all quiz questions correctly, bells and cheers go off and they receive a special prize pack including information pamphlets, balloons, tattoos and either a wristband, activity book and crayon set, stress star or magnetic picture frame.

Department of Communities, Disability Services Queensland
Our display, themed building diverse and inclusive communities, promotes Families, Multicultural Affairs, Disability Services Queensland and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.

Our display offers something for every visitor including performances from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and other artists from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Win! Participants can try their hand at decoding a braille message to go in the draw to win a $200 music voucher. The winner will be drawn after the end of the Ekka.

Department of Child Safety
Our display focuses on the key message that child protection is everyone's responsibility.

Our display features the foster and kinship carer recruitment campaign encouraging more Queenslanders to become carers. A selection of television advertisements currently being shown around the state in support of this important campaign can be viewed at the display.

To help children identify the basic needs that every child deserves to have met the display hosts two interactive games re-enforcing the message that child protection is everyone's business.

Information on how to become a foster carer, child safety and the role of the Department in ensuring children have positive futures is available at our display.

Department of Education, Training and the Arts
Our display includes an interactive walk and activities for children teaching them about a healthy lifestyle and a healthy planet.  Information and brochures about the Department and its initiatives are available at the display.


Department of Emergency Services
Our interactive display encourages Queenslanders to "be a step ahead in an emergency" and be ready for the impacts of climate change. 

Our display promotes a range of safety messages through computer games including hidden treasures, memory and word search.  Gamers are encouraged to be prepared for a range of emergency situations such as cyclones, bushfires, floods, storms and house fires. Visit the kids page at www.emergency.qld.gov.au to access the games online.

Volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service and Local Ambulance Committees along with operational and departmental personnel are on hand to answer any questions.

Department of Housing
In keeping with this year's theme of climate change our display focuses on water-efficiency. The display features a model of Kelvin Grove Urban Village, an environmentally sustainable community, as well as special activities for children, including a mural of a climate smart neighbourhood to colour in and a touch-screen water-wise game. Seed packs of water-wise plants will be handed out for display visitors to take home.

Also available from our display is a range of information on products and services, including practical ways you can make your home an easier and safer place to live.

Department of Infrastructure and Planning
Our department works across Queensland to ensure planning and infrastructure essential to our state's prosperous future is developed and delivered. 
 
Visit our display to see some of the projects we're delivering for Queensland.

-Statutory regional planning-planning for a stronger, more liveable and sustainable
 community.
-South East Queensland Water Grid project-providing water for the future.
-Airport Link, Airport Roundabout Upgrade and the Northern Busway (Windsor to
  Kedron)-reducing Brisbane's congestion.

Department of Justice and Attorney-General
Our display invites you into the courtroom to experience being a judge, witness and/or jury member, with courtroom scripts available for listening. A popular attraction is again featured in the top 10 baby names for January 2008 to June 2008!

An interactive display also highlights the topic climate change and encourages you to become a 'green' consumer and further provides helpful shopping tips to achieve this.

Justice professionals including representatives from Legal Aid Queensland, the Public Trustee of Queensland and the Electoral Commission Queensland will be on hand to answer enquiries and offer information about the services available to the public.

Department of Main Roads
Our display focuses on climate change and features a continuous painted mural with "pop-up" signage detailing the current Main Roads climate smart initiatives:

-Recycling water on roads.
-Protecting animals, creating wildlife on our road corridors.
-Planting trees for tomorrow with community groups.
-Tackling congestion with cycle ways, bus ways and pedestrian paths.
-Reduce, reuse, recycle in Main Roads offices.
-Energy efficient lighting on our roads.

Our display also includes simulations/drive throughs of major infrastructure projects and an interactive question and answer game for children on climate change.

Department of Mines and Energy
Our display features two components; the EnergyWise Challenge and Queensland's Energy Future.

EnergyWise Challenge
The 'EnergyWise Challenge', an interactive game, aims to educate children, parents and teachers about energy efficiency in the home. Visitors to our display can discover simple ways to save energy, money and the environment.

Queensland's Energy Future
'Queensland's Energy Future' aims to inform adults about the energy sources that will play a key part in Queensland's future - gas, renewable energy and clean coal technologies.

Department of Natural Resources and Water
To find out how to be WaterWise, head to our display near the front of the pavilion. Discover how much water you can save around the home and see Whizzy the water drop take a journey through the water cycle.

Information is also available on gardening with greywater and how to apply for government rebates on water-saving devices.

Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries
Our display showcases our science with an emphasis on 'adaptive industries'.

Our display explains how the Department is using innovation, creativity and technology to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Queensland's primary industries and highlights the importance of primary industries and its impact on our everyday lives.

In addition, we are promoting our new partnership with the Australian Agricultural College Corporation (AACC), which will form the basis to address the critical skills and labour shortage affecting the productivity of Queensland's primary industries sector.

Department of Public Works
Anyone for tennis? The Department of Public Works is celebrating the new State Tennis Centre at Tennyson with a model of the Centre and interactive tennis game at this year's Ekka.

Kids will have fun playing our Wii interactive tennis game and winners will have a ball - a giveaway tennis ball, that is!

QBuild's stonemasons will once again demonstrate their ancient craft in their enclosed glass booth.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions about the Centre, the Department and how the Department is 'going green'.

Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
Our display features wall-mounted light boxes with information on some of the Department's priority industry sectors including processed foods, biotechnology, renewable and alternative fuels, environment technologies, marine, aviation and manufacturing. 

Visitors can complete a short activity to receive a discount voucher for the "Brainwaves @ the Ekka" showbag as well as give-aways such as colouring sheets, book marks and paper hats.

Environmental Protection Agency
Our ClimateSmart Living House has been revamped as a custom-built steel frame sustainable house that shows visitors practical ways to make their own homes more sustainable. The House promotes elements such as water saving showerheads, power consumption comparison of different light bulbs, energy efficient appliances and the use of environmentally friendly building products.

In addition to the ClimateSmart Living House we will be profiling the Office of Climate Change at the front of the pavilion.  The Office of Climate Change brings together policy makers and scientists to conduct research and develop policies about climate change issues significant to Queensland.

Join EPA's rangers in a fun packed 30-minute stage show to celebrate 100 years of national parks in Queensland. Learn more about the work of a ranger at Brisbane Forest Park and Daisy Hill Koala Centre and the aims of the EPA. Come and meet the rangers and their reptiles (lizards, snakes and turtles) to learn about the importance of habitat protection and how you can build a 'wildlife friendly' backyard.

Queensland's first national park, a patch of Tamborine Mountain rainforest called Witches Falls, was declared on 28 March 1908. Meet rangers and members of the National Parks Association of Queensland and view the historic display of photographs and memorabilia. Learn more about the role of rangers in conserving Queensland's natural and cultural heritage.

Queensland Corrective Services
We are bringing the popular Passive Alert Drug Detection (PADD) dog show to the Ekka this year.

The PADD dog show explains the role of drug detection dogs in corrections, how the dogs are trained, and also includes a demonstration of how they work.  The dogs and their handlers are available to meet with members of the public before and after the show.

Visitors can enjoy the show in the pavilion theatrette each day from Friday August 8 until Friday August 15 at 3pm.
An electronic touch screen information kiosk is located at the Department of Justice and Attorney-General display allowing visitors, through the use of on-screen navigation tools, to:

-Take a virtual tour of a correctional centre.
-See how prisoners spend their days.
-Gain an understanding of how prisoners on community-based orders are managed.
-Learn how  QCS is employing the latest in energy and water efficient 
 technologies in the design and construction of correctional centres.

Queensland Transport
Our display outlines our commitment to the state by showcasing a number of programs and initiatives such as QT Kids, Maritime Safety and the Cycle Network Program.  The display appeals to adults and children and provides useful tips on how to reduce gas emissions.

Elements of the display include a brake-test machine, interactive touch-screen kiosks and a computer for online transactions such as change of address and motor vehicle registration.

Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
Our display provides information on responsible alcohol consumption and responsible gambling as well as some crazy facts on the odds of winning.

Queensland's 150th Celebrations (Q150)
In 2009 Queensland will turn 150 and we want everyone to help us celebrate! 

Visit our Q150 display to learn some fun facts about what has shaped us as a state and see what major projects/events are planned across the State in 2009.

Parts of the USA, Singapore, Belgium and the UK have been drinking Purified Recycled Water for decades. South-east Queensland is using the world's best technology and strict water safety regulations to secure a vital source for our future.

Residential Tenancies Authority
The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) administers the Acts that relate to residential renting in Queensland and provides quality services to meet the diverse and evolving needs of the rental sector. 

Our display will provide information in relation to the rules for renting as well as information for tenants and lessors (landlords) on how to operate and live in a rental property to achieve sensible climate change sustainability.

Sport and Recreation Queensland
Don't miss the Find Your 30 display at this year's Brisbane Ekka from 7 - 17 August 2008.  Get active by climbing the giant rock wall, one of the few free activities at the Ekka, guaranteed to get your heart pumping. For those who like to keep their feet on the ground, try a mini-obstacle course in the Queensland Government Pavilion.  The display features fun activities such as a stair climb, tyre jumping challenge and balancing beam. There is also helpful tips and information on finding 30 minutes of activity a day!  We hope to see you at the Ekka and help you to find your 30 minutes of activity a day!
