Our culture

Queensland Week is a great time to explore our state's diverse culture. Expand your Queensland horizons at some of these fascinating cultural places.

Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)
Located in Brisbane's South Bank precinct, the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) focuses on art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Major 2008 exhibitions include an exclusive exhibition of Pablo Picasso's personal art collection and a comprehensive Gordon Bennett retrospective.

Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum
The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum features Australian art and local history. Exhibitions change regularly and the gallery and museum also runs educational and social activities. Admission is free.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre
Take a self-guided tour of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre, located in Edge Hill, Cairns. The Visitor Centre has a museum, aircraft display and souvenir shop.

Cobb and Co. Museum
The Cobb and Co. Museum features the famous Cobb and Co. coaches and vehicles from the horse-drawn era. Located in Toowoomba, the collection includes farm wagons, hawkers barrows, delivery carts and buggies. The museum also features displays on Toowoomba and the Darling Downs' natural and cultural history.

Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich
The Workshops Rail Museum is a great place for families and railway enthusiasts. The interactive museum has both permanent exhibitions and special events and features big machinery and colourful multimedia experiences. It won the 2007 Australian Tourism Award for Heritage and Cultural Tourism.

Royal Historical Society of Queensland
The Royal Historical Society of Queensland has its headquarters in the Commissariat Store, which is one of the oldest buildings in Brisbane. The society welcomes visitors to their headquarters to tour the building and visit the convict display, library and museum collection. The society also hosts cultural events and activities.

Cairns Regional Gallery
Cairns Regional Gallery is far north Queensland's only visual art museum. The gallery's collection focuses on artworks that are relevant to far north Queensland's history, environment and culture. It incorporates a significant component of traditional and contemporary works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

State Library of Queensland
Located in Brisbane's South Bank cultural precinct, the State Library has a wealth of historical and cultural information. The library also regularly hosts exhibitions, film screenings, displays and children's activities - most are free.

Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts
The Judith Wright Centre program features music, theatre, dance, poetry, visual arts, multimedia and screen culture. The centre's lively events calendar hosts established Australian and overseas artists as well as promoting emerging local talent.

Embroiderers Guild Queensland
The Embroiderers' Guild Queensland Inc. is the place to come if you enjoy the fine arts especially embroidery. 2008 is the 40th birthday of the Guild and to celebrate there will be exhibitions daily 9.30am to 4pm from 31 May to 7 June.

Artisan
Visit Artisan to see innovative design and hand crafted products. Artisan's vision is that  Queensland design and hand-made products be recognised and valued for their excellence and innovation in design and production.
